There are a number of smaller youth hostels in England and Wales that are run by volunteers, which include J and me. It’s a lovely system – for a weekend of training, you are on a mailing list and can pick one week or more to run a lovely youth hostel in exchange for free accommodation and the afternoons off. The minimum commitment is one week per year and a number of managers do a lot more than that. We take a week annual leave and take the opportunity to explore a new part of the country.
This year, we are managing YHA Slaidburn (near to Clitheroe). It’s in Lancashire! Well, it is now. Historically, Slaidburn has been in the West Riding (of Yorkshire) and we are trying to reclaim this lovely spot for Yorkshire. We have decorated reception suitably to raise awareness of our aim:

It’s a privilege to be able to take a week to volunteer for something people really appreciate. The hostel is well-loved in the village and brings in passing trade for the pub and the shop (both excellent). Walkers and cycle riders use it a lot, as well as those undertaking local activities – we have had some academics this week who are undertaking long-term environmental surveying in the area, and the hostel is block-booked by groups for weekend activities in particular, such as walking groups, the RSPB and outdoor adventure groups.
For our part, we have brought our bikes and have been out and about exploring an area new to both of us. The scenery is wonderful and flows on from the Yorkshire Dales, which are just down the road. We’ve also explored Lancaster, a lovely university city, and somewhere to go back to.
Here, have a couple of photos.

Must dash – more later this week. I am back on evening duty on reception and I’ve popped across to the pub for dessert and wifi.
Hope all is good with you,
Cxx
